LORIENT, DYNAMISM OF SOUTH BRITTANY
With about 200 000 inhabitants, Lorient is the third urban centre in Brittany. Cap l'Orient, the Lorient Metropolitan District (‘Pays de Lorient’)  is above all a specialized maritime centre, well-equipped with marinas, commercial and fishing harbours. Endowed with a strong identity, the Pays de Lorient cultivates its maritime and Celtic images. Each year in August, the ‘Lorient Interceltic Festival’  is the largest world gathering of Celtic cultures (with around 700 000 festival-goers and 4 500 artists).

THE COAST, A UNIQUE PANORAMA
With a natural harbour among the most sheltered in France, Lorient is a meeting place for departures, stopovers and arrivals of great sailing races, or simple cruises. In the heart of South Brittany, Lorient and its neighbourhood is the ideal place to stopover and make the most beautiful cruises, from the Glénan Islands to the Gulf of Morbihan, without forgetting the Islands of Groix, Belle-Ile, Houat and Hoëdic.
With its quality of life and its wealthy coastline, Lorient is also the privileged  departure point for well-known touristic sites : the Citadelle of Port Louis, Pont-Aven, Carnac … Here, above all, the local culture is the sea, the estuaries and the activities that are connected to it : walking, sailing, kayaking and fishing.

A HUGE SAILING SECTOR
The dock of Lorient plays, since its creation, a most important role in shipbuilding. Over the last ten years, the sailing industry has been the main field of diversification of the economy. The reconversion of the former submarine base Lorient-Keroman into a European Sailing centre, is one of its most representative visiting cards through the establishment of a base to prepare races out at sea and a specialized site of firms and companies. From April 2008, the Cité de la Voile Eric Tabarly, equipment dedicated to the great sailor and to the practice of  racing out at sea, will be one of its figureheads.
